Let me echo Wes's comments. AIPS does not modify system files in any
way although the user may have to modify the display parameters to allow
for TrueColor and large shared memory and new internet socket alias
names, both of which require root-like privilege. But install.pl will
not do these things, you must do them by hand. In fact, if install.pl
discovers that it is being run as root, it quits since root has
privilege to do the sorts of things you mention.

emacs requires X already to be running which is not the default on Macs
- perhaps you closed the xterm for aips and no longer have an X running???
