[daip] problem with running aips

It sounds to me as if you have had installation problems.  The file in
your $SYSLOCAL area called "aips" should be a link file to your
$AIPS_ROOT/START_AIPS file.  There should also be a file called "AIPS"
which is similarly a link to the start up file.

What sort of installation have you done?
