[daip] macbook pro 15"

I just rebooted the laptop and the funny business  described below in  
#2 appears to have gone away. I can start aips in a teminal window or  
start X11 (yeah, I know, do don't have to do this now, but), start an  
xterm then aips, and all seems fine.
