The color option which is what I was going to recommend after reading 
your first paragraph only works within the plot area.  Labeling outside 
the plot cannot be done in such complicated colors - and would look 
entirley different against the white background compared to where they 
are drawn against a black background.

You can add your own labels to aips plots in the PostScript.  See HELP 
POSTSCRIPT.  If you know which contour is which - and the color will 
show that - then perhaps you can figure out how to place contour labels. 
  That problem in a general contouring package is simply too hard. 
Choosing a BLC, TRC to allow room for the RGBLEVS labeling in the image 
area is a simpler choice.
