[daip] renaming a machine

Since I do not know what exactly you have done I am perplexed as to
the task being "hopeless".  The machine's name appears in 
    $AIPS_ROOT/HOSTS.LIST
    $NET0/DADEVS.LIST        to define data areas
    $NET0/NETSP              all the data areas
and as a directory name in
    $AIPS_ROOT/DA00
    $AIPS_ROOT/DATA   (or wherever DADEVS says the data areas are to
                       be found)

And that is all.

Now if you have made the machine name also the SITE name, then the
SITE name needs to be changed in the aforementioned HOSTS.LIST file
and as the name of the directory of $SYSLOCAL found in
    $TST/$ARCH/SYSTEM
