[daip] AIPS installation problem: Tek and Message Servers not working (Ubuntu)

Dear daip,
I am currently installing AIPS (31DEC07) on the latest Ubuntu 
distribution. It all works well, except that Tek and Message Servers do 
not seem to work. I have consulted your web pages, and as far as I can 
tell everything was done appropriately:

1 - /etc/services has the right services included;
2 - there are no files or subdirectories that match the current hostname;

when I launch aips, and I have tried both the terminal and an xterm, the 
output is as follows:

START_AIPS: I am GUESSING you are at a workstation called midas

START_AIPS: Starting TPMON daemons on MIDAS asynchronously...

TVSERVER: Starting AIPS TV locking, Inet domain
XASERVERS: Start XAS on midas, DISPLAY :0
XAS: ** TrueColor FOUND!!!
XASERVERS: Start graphics server TEKSRV on midas, DISPLAY :0
XAS: ***  Using shared memory option for speed ***
XAS: Using screen width height 1270 924, max grey level 255
XASERVERS: Start message server MSGSRV on midas, DISPLAY :0
STARTPMON: [MIDAS] Starting TPMON1 with output SUPPRESSED

the missing windows do seem to be launched, but killed(?) straight away. 
A "ps -auxwww" results in:

At this stage, aips seems to work ok, but all messages are directed to 
the terminal where aips was launched.

I believe this is not a aips problem, but probably an ubuntu issue... 
probably an easy thing to spot, but I fear my understanding of systems 
is not enough to deal with the problem.

If you could give me a hand, I would very much appreciate it.
