My guess is that the start up of a process in an xterm is failing.
This has become tricky since normally sites now install our binary
versions. The xterm as it starts needs to know a library path which
includes the aips libraries. We used to suggest that your .bashrc (or
.tcshrc or whatever other shell startup script) have a reference to
$AIPS_ROOT/LOGIN.SH (or $AIPS_ROOT/LOGIN.CSH) so that this would be
set. The latest server codes (changed Jan 17 2007 here in the 31DEC07
version) have a compound statement which should let you avoid this.
To debug this problem, copy $SYSUNIX/XASERVERS to $SYSLOCAL. Edit
that $SYSLOCAL file to remove the comment symbol in the line
containing -hold. The xterm will then stay visible until you kill it
which will allow any error messages to be read.

If they still do not make sense send me what they say.
