We do recommend the binary installation rather strongly and I am
suprised that the information on our web pages caused you to conclude
otherwise.  The only case where we recommend local compilation under
any operating system is when you plan to develope AIPS programs
locally (an uncommon occurence).  The compilers we use produce load
modules that run faster (as much as 50% depending on architecture) so
the code for local compilation, especially for MacPPCs, has not been
tested much recently.
