i am running out of ideas too.  This is hard to debug.  What shell are
you using and did you bring 31DEC07 up to date?  (Note the export
below for bash et al - that was the essential bug fix in September)

the statement

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH; ./TKSRV1

is supposed to cause an expansion of the $LD_LIBRARY_PATH in XASERVERS
and then to get it set in the xterm so that the next command will have
it set.  Adding an echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH just expands in XASERVERS and
echos the expanded in the xterm.  It really is only a check on
AIPSPATH not on what the xterm gets.

I am forwarding this one to daip in the hope that Wes may have some
ideas.
