Eric - I tried the test with NFIELD=2300, same result.
I went back to NFIELD=2326 and  I also switched first and last maps.  
Identical results (no data below 25deg51m, just blanked)
  First map had:
AIPS 1: RA---SIN    64    00 00 00.000      32.94       -240.000    0.00
AIPS 1: DEC--SIN    64    28 00 00.000      33.00        240.000    0.00

and then, after the switch, first map had:
AIPS 1: RA---SIN    64    23 44 00.000      32.94       -240.000    0.00
AIPS 1: DEC--SIN    64    24 00 00.000      33.00        240.000    0.00

i have this sinking feeling that i'm doing something silly, but can't 
see what!
