The Intel compiler does some risky things apparently. On Pentium IVs the improvement is around 30% - on the AMD it is only 7%. I find it more interesting that it works at all - the native malloc returns a 64-bit pointer while the one included from our machines returns a 32-bit pointer. I will be investigating more today.
