Mike - how remote is your laptop from the rest of the system?

If you simply say aips on the compute server it will attempt to order
your laptop to start TV servers etc from a disk address appropriate to
your compute server not your laptop. I am assuming that you have aips
installed both on the compute server and on the laptop. To get the
TVs to work best it would be good to start the servers on the laptop
locally by running aips on the laptop. Then say "aips tvok" to the
compute server. Another way to run is to say on the compute server
"aips tv=local" which runs the servers in a local mode on the compute
server but tunnels the displays to your laptop. That is what your
xclock command is doing.
