You can try adding the line

LINK=/usr/lib/libgcc.a

to your 31DEC04/MACPPC/SYSTEM/LDOPTS.SH file

Look for the "case $COMPILER" section and depending on your compiler 
add the above LINK= line above the ;;

You can then try rerunning INSTEP4.
