I believe it says somewhere early in our documentation never to
install as root.  My philosophy is that if I have to know the root
password then the whole system has failed.

You need to log in as root now and 

chgrp -rf aipsuser *
chown -rf bzavala  *

or some such.  There has to be owner write privilege on the source
code and group write privilege on all files in data areas including
$AIPS_ROOT/DA00/<host> directories.
