The routine that is failing is 

gethostbyname ('shadowfax')

So on the laptop, outside aips say

nslookup shadowfax

I bet that fails.  In other words the internet name server is missing
to your laptop.  You could probably define shadowfax in /etc/hosts on
your laptop since you know who shadowfax is (IP address) or some
system guru could assist you to get name servers to work.
