[daip] Aips freezing on remote computers

Most peculiar.

How long have you waited after aips hangs? I ask because one
possibility is that the SG file for user 1024 is locked for some
reason. The waiting message will come out after a while and then
repeat at intervals. Two things to try:

1. Try another user number - one that has not been used.

2. Try waiting 10 minutes on user 1024 before the ctrl-C.

Linux has trouble with file locking when the data files are accessed
across NFS. The person who installed your system was planning what I
thought to be an odd arrangement of disk areas. I see some evidence
of that in that your data area is called LOCAL_1 rather than REALOS_1.

AIPS has 2+ data areas that matter:

$DA00 contains control files and $DA01, $DA02, etc are regular data
areas. All of these work best if they are on your computer. The
server machine may pretend to have them and then access the real files
(on REALOS for example) via soft links. Other schemes do seem to hang
from these bugs in Linux file locking.

I suggest you go talk to the person who installed aips after
conducting the above tests.
