[daip] 31DEC03 on a laptop

Hi Eric,
  I installed 31DEC03 on jump (Kristy's Linux laptop), and a very quick
check looks OK; except that I can't start up as a new user in 31DEC03.
I.e., let's say I start 31DEC02 as user 11, then I can start 31DEC03 as
user 11.  But if I don't initialize, say, user 1413 in 31DEC02, and I
try to start it directly in 31DEC03, all seems to start well, but no commands
(ucat, type, etc.) are understood.  This must be something extremely simple --
any thoughts?
