Check your .Xdefaults file - it may be requiring an 8-bit depth
AIPStv*useTrueColor: 0
while your LInux box is running at 24. Change the 0 to a 1 or better
yet get rid of the line. Then do a
xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults
I was about to give the reflex answer that you must run at either 8 or
24 bit depth, that 16 (the Linux default for some reason) is not
supported by XAS. Details on that are at
http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips/aipsmgr/index.html
but I suspect that the fault is in your .Xdefaults (not in root's
version).
