Are you saying that you type a command to aips and it then takes
3 minutes to get the aips prompt back? These times for FITLD
especially do not seem long depending on what they are doing - but cpu
to real ratios should be > 0.2 most of the time.

    Several questions occur to me:

1. What compiler did you use (and what is its version - try g77 -v)?

2. Is aips installed on some other computer with access only over nfs?

3. Is your system trying each time to mount some disks somewhere and
only continuing after the mount times out? (When that system is
actually running and exporting its disks you would then get normal
   performance.)

     That should run really well.

These all indicate that the ability to make a socket was gone
for some reason. We do not depend on inetd to assign sockets (we
specify them as below), but I believe that it must be running for
sockets to work. the messages from an aips startup all look normal.

You can try aips tv=local if the inet sockets are failing. This may
work so long as you do not need to go between computers.

I am concerned about the time variable performance you describe - let
me know what you find.
