Subject: File-lock problem solved.
Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2002 11:16:07 +0100 (MET)

Hi Eric, Pat,

Finally, I can announce you some good news. AIPS works again here, and you
were correct from the beginning. It was indeed a file locking problem.

It took quite a bit of detective work to find out where the problem was.
I used your wholocked program to try to find out which file was locked,
but it didn't work at all (it just hung like AIPS did).

When I asked our system manager, he tried to run wholocked, and it did
work, even from my account. The difference was that he copied the source
to the /tmp area, and tried it on a test file in /tmp
It turned out that the file lock was on the home directory disk itself!
So we rebooted that machine, and after that, wholocked did work from my
home directory.

I then tested it on the SPD000000; file in $DA00/$HOST, and it was indeed
this file that was locked! So, I ran SYSETUP for all machines, and this
solved all the problems, to my great relief!!
I can even announce that AIPS runs under OSF1 version V5.1, without having
to do any modifications.

So, if you get other people asking similar questions, have them check
if there is a lock in their home directory. Another manifestation of this
problem is that other programs such as staroffice have similar problems.

Thanks a lot for all your help,

Carlos
