The 2nd and 3rd above are an integer multiple of 2880 bytes as
they must be, the first is not. Did you use "binary" when doing the
ftp? That is absolutely required.

This is an error looking for the aips message server which tells
me that you do not have the system services AIPS requires installed in
thee /etc/services

sssin 5000/tcp SSSIN # AIPS TV server
ssslock 5002/tcp SSSLOCK # AIPS TV Lock
msgserv 5008/tcp MSGSERV # AIPS Message Server
tekserv 5009/tcp TEKSERV # AIPS TekServer
aipsmt0 5010/tcp AIPSMT0 # AIPS remote FITS disk access
aipsmt1 5011/tcp AIPSMT1 # AIPS remote tape 1
aipsmt2 5012/tcp AIPSMT2 # AIPS remote tape 2
aipsmt3 5013/tcp AIPSMT3
aipsmt4 5014/tcp AIPSMT4
aipsmt5 5015/tcp AIPSMT5

If you are trying to use TPMON to read/write data from one computer
using a tape drive on another computer then these services are
required. If you are using a local tape drive then something else is
wrong. I would need to see the inputs to MOUNT, $NET0/TPDEVS.LIST (or
all the messages when you start up aips), and the messages from the
atteempt to use tape.

I think that this is somehow correct although I do not understand how
a record inside the file could have any fixed length. Your file is
exactly N*2880 bytes + 685 long so aips and ls are consistent.

This says you have loaded the data compressed (it says 3 - for
real imaginary and weight when uncompressed)

This looks like garbage to me. Do your other files look like good
data or similar garbage?

Use the AIPS CookBook - see

for the table of contents and access to the chapters.
