XAS does not work on the (Linux default) X Windows which is a 16-bit
"TrueColor".  That color scheme only allows 31 levels for an image,
too few for science.  You need to convert to 24/32-bit TrueColor or
8-bit PseudoColor.  The FAQ has near its top a discussion of this
point.
