[daip] AIPS installation

Hi.  I'm trying to install AIPS on a debian linux system which has never
had AIPS on it before.  The installation seems to go well until it tries
to run "FILAIP", at which point the following error occurs:

Data disk assignments:
  (Using global default file /home/aips/DA00/DADEVS.LIST)
  Disk 1 (1) is /home/aips/DATA/GEORGE_1

Illegal instruction

I have no idea where that MSd001000.001 file is meant to live.  I was
trying the 31DEC00 version of AIPS because the '01 version failed with the
same error.  Any help you can give me would be /greatly/
appreciated.  Thanks,
