       This is odd to me - errno 5 does not mean IERR = 5

     If there is nothing on the tape then there is no end of
information so this might be expected to fail.

What kind of computer are you using, what version of what operating
system?  We may well also need some detailed info about the
installation parameters of the tape device itself, but let's start
with some of the basics...
