-------------- next part --------------

Hi:

I'm having a very difficult time getting aips to run properly. I
either can't run the TVDEVS.SH (aips hangs on that) or I cannot access
the disks. These problems surface whether I am a user (shah4) or the
aips manager (aips); or if I am running aips from a remote machine
(starscream) or porting to a remote machine from the main server
(lai250). Below I list some relevant info on the problems I've had.
I believe most of them are solvable by setting parameters in files
which allow multiple users to point to different directories, as well
as open the tv devices remotely.

----

AIPS version: 31DEC01, running on the most recent version of Solaris.

In this email on aips usage at UIUC, the computers and users are
defined as follows:

Main AIPS server: lai250.astro.uiuc.edu or lai250 for short
Computer AIPS manager is using to test aips install:
		   starscream.astro.uiuc.edu or starscream

aips mananger account: aips
user account: shah4

----

(0) /etc/services and /etc/system have already been properly altered
on starscream so that tv servers will work. I can get them to appear
while running aips on starscream as shah4. However, I am booted out
of aips because I cannot read the disks (see 2 below). The aips
manager account cannot get beyond TVDEVS.SH whether running on
starscream or the server, lai250. Part of this may have to do with
changing services and system on lai250 itself. In fact, we are pretty
sure that changing /etc/services and /etc/system will deal with this
problem and allow us to at least run aips on lai250. However, having
local services would allow multiple users access to aips simultaneously.

(1) Why does TVDEVS.SH hang? That is, I cannot run aips on a machine
that is not the server (which I don't have physical access to anyway).

TVDEVS.SH looks for computers to run on in HOSTS.LIST. Here is where
TVDEVS.SH stops while trying to run aips on starscream as the aips manager:

START_AIPS: You seem to be at a workstation called starscream.astro.uiuc.edu
TVDEVS.SH: Remote TV assigned for TVHOST starscream.astro.uiuc.edu ***
TVDEVS.SH: Checking if starscream.astro.uiuc.edu is reachable via ssh...

The HOSTS.LIST file has an entry for this computer, starscream as:

1 2 3 4 5 6
* GOLDY SOL MYSITE NONE Solaris server, Computer center
+ STARSCREAM SUL UIUC NONE Decepticon Second-in-Command

This seems odd since I can at least partially start aips with active TV/TEK/
MSG servers as myself (shah4) on starscream. If I log into lai250, I get
hung the same way as the aips manager. "aips notv" as the aipsmanager
on lai250 is the only way I can access disks listed in NETSP.

(2) Otherwise I cannot access disks while on starscream. I can access
disks BUT TVDEVS.SH hangs while on lai250 as shah4, just as in the
case with the aips account. I get the following error when trying to
access aips as shah4 on starscream:

shah4 at STARSCREAM >aips
