The copyright statement is important and should be correct.  When you
create a new file, the date should only be this year.  In subsequent
years one adds that year to the list, e.g.

       1995, 1997, 1999-2001

either by replacing the end of a consecutive list (i.e. next year 2001
-> 2002 above) or adding , 2002 if the preveious highest was not
2001.

putbck used to attempt to do this for you but the pattern matching was
rather complex and it failed to do the right thing under a variety of
circumstances.  Pat has removed it and now offers to let you emacs the
file - but the emacs window comes up empty.  For folks from the aoc it
is easier to do a CTRL-C when this messages happens.  Then do an
   emacs -nw <file-name>
to fix the copyright in the xterm without having to spawn an X windows
emacs over the intranet.
