Nope; that's a red herring:

: orangutan_pmurphy; ls -l /home/aips//FITS
lrwxrwxrwx    1 pmurphy  aipsuser       29 Mar 28  2000 /home/aips//FITS -> /home/polaris/AIPS_USERS/FITS/
: orangutan_pmurphy; ls -l /home/aips/FITS 
lrwxrwxrwx    1 pmurphy  aipsuser       29 Mar 28  2000 /home/aips/FITS -> /home/polaris/AIPS_USERS/FITS/

The shell treats multiple contiguous slashes as a single slash.
