The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is seeking a Systems, Network
and Security Administrator at its headquarters in Charlottesville,
Virginia.

Under general direction of the senior UNIX system administrator, the
Systems, Network and Security Administrator will assume responsibility
for system administration on a variety of platforms, with special
emphasis on a rapidly growing network of LINUX systems. The position
will also assist local users with problems relating to system operations
and third-party software, including installation of such software where
required. Other duties include: technical support of software and
hardware for local, wide-area and Intranet networking; design and
enhancement of network services throughout NRAO; and working with system
administrators at other NRAO sites to co-ordinate computing environments
Observatory-wide. In addition, the individual will play a key role in
computer security for Charlottesville and will participate in NRAO-wide
security efforts.

Qualifications include a B.S. degree or equivalent and at least three
years' experience in UNIX or LINUX system administration and network
support using TCP/IP; thorough knowledge of Linux, Sun/Solaris, Digital
Unix (OSF1), and/or HP-UX; thorough and demonstrable knowledge of
Internet and UNIX security issues; and familiarity with network
programming and utilities in a UNIX environment, Perl, shell scripts,
INN, SMTP, NIS, DNS, Cisco router configuration, and
Kickstart. Experience with any of the following will also be an asset:
AIX, installation and maintenance of scientific and astronomical
software such as AIPS or IRAF, LAN/WAN design, and frame relay. Strong
communications skills and proven ability to help users with a wide range
of skills and interests is highly desirable.
