Dear subscribers,

ESO is pleased to announce "First Light" for its VLT Interferometer,
achieved on March 17, 2001. The first test observations were very
successful and, as an early example of the power of this new facility,
included the measurement of the diameter of a bright star in the
southern sky with superior accuracy. The full story, with 12 photos
