Along the same line, one can note that an ADC can be looked at as a 
hardware lossy compression device for its input voltage, so it's not 
as if even the "raw pristine original data" had usually seen no compression
ever, except for photon-counting detectors. 

On a well designed system the ADC settings are such that the quantization 
adds negligible noise, or occasionally set according to some other compromise
(e.g. one may accept some quantization noise to buy an extended range), and 
software compression is not really different in that respect.
