[fitsbits] Start of the HEALPix "Public Comment Period"

This is to announce the start of the 4-week formal Public Comment Period on 
the paper "Mapping on the HEALPix grid" by Mark Calabretta and Boud Roukema. 
  A link to the latest version of the paper is available at 
http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~mcalabre/WCS.  Particular attention should be 
given to section 6 of this paper which presents the HEALPix spherical 
projection in the same terms as the other projections presented in the FITS 
WCS Paper II on the "Representations of celestial coordinates in FITS" 
(which is also available from that web site).  The authors of this paper 
have requested that the IAU FITS Working Group consider approving section 6 
as an extension of the FITS WCS standard.

All interested members of the FITS community are urged to submit comments 
about this proposal here on the sci.astro.fits newsgroup, or on the related 
FITSBITS moderated mail list.  Following the conclusion of this formal 
comment period, it is likely that the 4 regional FITS committees and the IAU 
FITS Working Group will then vote on whether to formally adopt this proposal.
