[fitsbits] definition of FITS

Sorry if this has been asked a million times already but I haven't
seen a FAQ for this newsgroup. I don't know what FITS means or stands
for but I think it is time for me to find out since that seems to be one
of the formats available for data from the SDSS. Can someone point me to
a document where FITS is explained?
