[fitsbits] Changes at the FITS Support Office

The FITS Support Office, which was formerly maintained by the Astrophysical
Data Center at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, is now being hosted by
the HEASARC, also at GSFC.  The reason for this move is that funding for the
ADC has been terminated, effective October 1, 2002.  The ADC staff members
(previously Barry Schlesinger, and more recently Cynthia Cheung and Kirk
Borne) have provided many years of valuable service to the FITS community by
maintaining the information resources that are available from the the FITS
Support Office web site at http://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov.

This move of the http://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov web site should be transparent to
users; the only difference is that the site is now hosted on a HEASARC
server instead of an ADC server.  The related FITS data files that were
available from ftp://nssdcftp.gsfc.nasa.gov/standards/fits/ have been copied
to to a new HEASARC ftp site at
ftp://legacy.gsfc.nasa.gov/fits_info/fits_office/. The links on the FITS
Support Office Web site have been changed to point to this new ftp area.

In the near future I plan to begin updating some of the FITS Support Office
web pages.  If you have any suggestions for improvements or know of links
to other FITS resources that should be mentioned on this site, please let me
know.
