My apologies, Lucio. I'm hyper-careful about disseminating my email adress
and I should probably use a bogus email address that is more obviously

Yes, Dr. Pence explained this to me. I'm storing 8-bit unsigned char
("greyscale") images, so FITS is probably overkill for my application as far
as precision is concerned.

I need lossless compression, too. The "images" that I'm storing are actually
"height fields" (like a topographical map).
