Depending on exactly what your custom format is, you may be able to use
the Starlink CONVERT package which allows conversion between many
different image data formats. It uses the Starlink NDF format as a
intermediate format, so you would convert your format to NDF, then convert
NDF to FITS. You should look at the "unf2ndf" command which converts a
sequential unformatted file to an NDF (you will also need ndf2fits).
