ASCII table tricks

I was wondering when someone would mention that.  It would be
fairly straightforward to arrange to skip over a header and apply
some general operation beginning at a byte offset into a file.  I'd
be interested in hearing specific plans for this, though.  Note also
that not all editors will choke on a line 2880+ characters long.

Of course, reformatting the table data on the fly to include the
necessary control characters (and remove them again afterwards) is
also possible, but this is a much more expensive and obscure operation.

Has anyone simply tried embedding newlines in a table to see what
happens with current software (and what the handling advantages are)?
