    I agree with Bruce.

    I wouldn't go too far hammering a round peg into a square hole but 
it's worth
trying.  No point in writing a service that already exists.    If it 
doesn't fit the needs
so be it.

    I've recommended in the past that when it came to logging syslog 
should be
ruled in/out as opposed to merely ignored.
