I have some dollar figures and other info from
Kevin concerning Jbed.
First, the bad news. Esmertec, the manufacturer
of Jbed, has declined to commit to a port of
Jbed to the TriCore architecture and the TC11IB
chip. To my mind, this fact effectively kills
Jbed as a means of putting Java in the MIB.
Other avenues of bringing Java to the MIB still
exist, but have not yet been explored.
With regard to costs (just in case & for purposes
of comparison) -
Jbed RTOS & IDE, 5 users,
1st 6 months of maintenance
included ............................ $9,800.00
Additional maintenance after
the 1st 6 months .................... 18% of the list
price of the
software
Target licensing, per CPU
(royalty fees), for
1001 to 10,000 units ................ $30.00/target X
1500 targets =
$45,000.00
Using round numbers, the total cost is $55,000, not
including the cost of a port or any development
tools that might be required.
Jbed can run on top of an RTOS. If they had not declined
to do a port, this approach might have satisfied the
requirement that assembler & C be easy to do in the context
of Jbed. Ports already exist for ThreadX & Nucleus.
Again, for comparisons sake, if it were necessary to
do a port of Jbed to an _rtos_ (rather than an architecture),
the cost of the port would have been two man weeks
(10 days ?) at $1.5K/day = $15,000.
