Eric,

yeah, after nearly abandoning softwareupdate and its various components for several years, Apple has been putting in some dedicated engineering time to making it functional and increasing the number of scenarios where OS updates, specifically, can be uneventful and quick. Glad you've gotten to experience this!

This went very much easier than previous major updates.  The Xcode stuff showed up in the
 System Settings > General > Software Update after which the only requirement was to update
the minimum version setting in all build routines and recompile everything.
