The *** is the clue.  FITLD defaults to ask for 10000 files but is only
smart enough to use I1, I2, and I3 formats.  I will fix this, but you
can work around the bug in the mean time.  First add '1000' to DATAIN
and ask for 1 file in order to get number 1000.   Then take away the
000 from DATAIN so that it ends in a 1.  And ask for 784 files.  This
should work.
