During the installation process there is a page that, when compiling yourself, requires a fair amount of work. It asks for the paths to your fortran and c compilers and the linker (usually the same fortran). That should work fine. It is possible that the Makefile for XAS does not get this right but I think that even that works. If you do not need to compile aips tasks of your own making, the binary installation is easier.
In VLBARUN, the sending of a mail message is really a very unimportant part. Leave OUTTEXT blank and the mail function will not cause any issue. The snippet of messages you sent are the end messages of something that went wrong in VLBARUN. Fortunately one of then says error #9 which lets me look in the VLBARUN script for that error. The messages that came out ahead of what you sent say either that CALSOUR does not include a phase reference source as specified in SOURCES or that CALSOUR contains the name of a phase reference target as specified in SOURCES. After correcting your inputs you may need to say p_restart to clean things up before restarting.
