Hi Eric,
My advisor mentioned that I have the option of
1.A normal linux PC or laptop
2.or using a cluster/ multiple cores
What do you recommend for a beginner? I'm leaning towards a simple linux laptop or desktop.
Diana

There are several pages in the install for which the default behavior is
fine, including tapes.
The aips web page www.aips.nrao.edu<http://www.aips.nrao.edu> refers to 2 VLBI tutorials. They
affor downloadable data and a step by step set of instructions. Of
course, VLBI data are harder to process than VLA data. You may find any
sort of data you like from archive.nrao.edu - all VLA data older than a
year is available to anyone.
3. I have no idea - that would depend on the person, how much time
he/she can spend, etc. AIPS is so large by now that even I do not
remember the names of everything or probably even their existence.
The verb apropos is very useful.
Eric
