    Actually, the START_AIPS script should have a setting of this variable
    after the initial comments.  Try looking at that file, or HOSTS.SH or 
    several others all of which should contain a local setting of $AIPS_ROOT.
    
    cd to your AIPS_ROOT area
    
    copy from $SYSUNIX the script AIPSROOT.DEFINE
    execute it while in the AIPS_ROOT area - it will edit all needed scripts 
    for the AIPS_ROOT
