Ok I tried making the /etc/sysctl.conf file with those lines, rebooted, and these are the lines I got after starting aips (tv still not working when trying to plot).  I'm running Mac OS Mojave if that makes a difference.


[LOCALHOST:/etc] peter% aips tv=local

START_AIPS: Will use or start first available Unix Socket based TV

Begin the one true AIPS number 1 (release of 31DEC18) at priority =   0

AIPS 1: You are not on a local TV device, welcome stranger

AIPS 1: You are assigned TV device/server   2

AIPS 1: You are assigned graphics device/server   2

AIPS 1: Enter user ID number

?UNIXSERVERS: Start TV LOCK daemon TVSRV1 on localhost

TVSERVER: Starting AIPS TV locking, Unix (local) domain

UNIXSERVERS: Start XAS1 on localhost, DISPLAY /private/tmp/com.apple.launchd.PL4Y67Y4jr/org.macosforge.xquartz:0

UNIXSERVERS: Start graphics server TKSRV1 on localhost, display /private/tmp/com.apple.launchd.PL4Y67Y4jr/org.macosforge.xquartz:0
