I am guessing that you did not set the major and minor axis sizes - I always
use something suitable to the image and set the two to the same value.
The sizes are used in the plotting of the symbols.  I note that I set the
one test file to about 13 pixels and another old ST file seemed to use the
size to differentiate the "stars".
