I never experienced this problem with the JVLA continuum data set that I reduced last spring. 

I now have two data sets from that same program on disk, taken and reduced in an identical way, and  IMAGR only gets into trouble with the second one, and only some of the time. 

I first encounted this a few weeks ago, when I restored the defaults to IMAGR and accidentally found that GAIN=0.1 could trigger an "abort" for the latter data set. (I had been using 0.15).

This seemed too strange for me to believe, and then I left on travel, so I didn't report it until Friday, when I experienced it again with my new data.
