Two possibilities that occur to me are 1) force users to choose autocorrs only or x-corr only, but not mixed or 2) have it autoscale on the x-corrs and just print out "***" for the autocorrs that are too big - that way users see there is something there and don't get worried by all-0 amplitudes and can then go fiddle with scaling if they need to actually see auto-corr amps.
