The CookBook Chapter 3 addresses such questions.
First, I would never ever cd to a directory down in among
the SDM and BDF files.  They have absurd names and
many many files and I try to stay away.  The area
/lustre/aoc/observers/nm-7005/ is accessible to you and
I would do something like
    export MYAREA=/lustre/aoc/observers/nm-7005/
or
    setenv MYAREA /lustre/aoc/observers/nm-7005/
depending on the shell (bash or tcsh).  Then in aips
I tell LWPLA OUTFILE = 'MYAREA:MYPLOT.eps
which is the correct grammar for file names in aips
(environment_variable:file_name).  This will work.
