Your computer appears to be enabled for AIPS already.
I suspect if you simply type "aips" in an xterm it will start
up and give you 4 data areas.  I have not tried to see
where they are but they should be on brahma.  You do
not have an ifficial user number, but that is unimportant
so long as you do not use public (shared) computers.
Most users on their own desktop, use multiple numbers
to separate projects (e.g. 273 for data on 3C273).  The
AIPS file system is very flat and so this separation comes
in handy.

To learn a bit about AIPS, see the CookBook which is
present in CV but also easily accessed via the web
 http://www.aips.nrao.edu/cook.html
which lets you download chapters in pdf or postscript
or access the full CookBook via acroread in a cross-linked
web capable version.  Chapters 2 and 3 and then Appendix C
might be most interesting.
