Have you looked at the end channel in detail?  Channel
1 always and channel N usually are not useful.  I agree
that the ****** seem excessive (it actually sums in log10
values and then converts) but the end channels are not
anything to worry about.  Channel 1 actually contains in
its lower half data from frequencies corresponding to
channel N+1/2 to N+1 unless for some reason things are
flipped around - making channel N the guaranteed bad one.
I did not think that P band did that but ???
